7 Simple Steps to Prevent Cancer

Cancer is a leading cause for worldwide deaths. According to the World Health Organization the annual cancer cases are expected to increase to 22 million in the next 20 years, from 8.2 million in 2012.

The main types of cancer are: lung cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer and esophageal cancer. The disease can be treated if it is detected early enough. Therefore it is very important to have regular tests for cancer and, most of all, not to ignore any symptoms.

 Although sometimes the cause for cancer is genetic, in most of the cases other factors trigger the disease: smoking, sun exposure, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, chronic infections, radiation, etc.

That is why,  all of us should be aware of the fact that we can prevent cancer. Believe it or not, it is not difficult at all. All you have to do is follow these 7 simple steps:

Tobacco increases the possibility of contracting lung cancer and oral cavity cancer, but also pancreatic, cervix, bladder and kidney.

2. Be active

Being physically active and keeping your body at normal weight helps you decrease your chances of contracting prostate, colon, lung, kidney and breast cancers.

3. Use sun screen

No matter how much you love the sun, always use sun screen and most of all, avoid tanning beds.  Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer.

4. Eat fruits and vegetables

Enzymes, vitamins and nutrients is what keeps you healthy on a cellular level. Some of the best foods to prevent cancer are tomatoes, broccoli, garlic, onion, green tea, berries, red wine, spices and soy.

5. Eat less animal fat and red meat

Excess animal fat and red meat are the main cause for obesity and so, a major risk for many types of cancer.

6. Reduce alcohol intake

Excessive alcohol intake (2 alcoholic drinks/per day for men and 1 alcoholic drink/per day for women) increase the risk factors for several types of cancer such as colon and rectal cancers.

7. Safe sex

Human Papilloma Virus or HPV is the leading factor for cervical cancer and other STD infections increase the risk for oral, anal, vaginal, penis and cervical cancers.
