Motivation & Exercise. Are they related? Why is it important to workout?

We all know the amazing amount of benefits that working out bring us, especially, when we visit our doctor and hear the same words once and over again: “you need to work out at least 30 minutes a day”. But, did you know that exercising has a huge impact in your brain and motivation? And more importantly, do you know how is it possible?

What happens when you exercise?

motivation-exercise-important-to-workoutWhen you exercise, many changes occur inside you, including some brain-related changes. As you’re working-out, your blood pressure goes up, your heart sends more blood to your muscles, your muscles call for more oxygen, and your breathing and heart rate increase dramatically. Your body feels you’re in stress, maybe fighting with an “enemy”, so; a protein called BDNF is released.

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) helps you “reset” all your system, protects & repairs your memory neurons. In this process we usually feel very lucid. But, of course this is not the end of the process, as is thanks to the chemicals called: endorphins that we “feel good” and our mood is boosted after training, suddenly we feel motivated!

If we feel happier and more motivated thanks to the endorphins then…

What are endorphins?

Endorphins are the natural “feel good” chemicals released by our brains. In other words, these are stress-related substances with a tendency to reduce the pain and discomfort accompanying physical activities such as exercising.  Furthermore, endorphins are in charge of the euphoria many people who exercise frequently feel.

And if that’s not enough reason to start working-out, here is another: Endorphins + BDNF, may as well help you enhance your cognitive functions: memory, reasoning and thinking. As a result, you tend to feel more focused and your productivity will increase while you’re at work.

Are endorphins the only chemical responsible for our happiness and motivation?

No. While exercising your brain may also release: adrenaline, serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, and GABA.  These neurochemicals work together with endorphins to make you “feel good”, happy and motivated in an amazing state of wellbeing with NO harmful side effects (apart from the inevitable muscle soreness, if we haven’t done this in a while).

Other Amazing benefits related with working-out:

  • It helps you recover from depression more quickly than average.
  • It allows you to lose weight in a natural way.
  • Your brain works at its best capacity, your nerve cells multiply, their connections become stronger, and are protected from damage.
  • You may be protected from diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease or even of suffering a stroke.

It’s good to know that thanks to endorphins, BDNF, and all the other neurotransmitters, a 20-minute walk every day is a great boost for starting your day and feeling healthier. What are you waiting for? Let’s Start!
