Men’s Most Common Health Problems

Men usually avoid signs for some common health problems and go to the doctor only when they are extremely sick or when symptoms do not go away. A recent study from the American Academy of Family Physicians says men should pay attention for those symptoms that could indicate potential health problems. A warning sign can be subtle and be there for some time, or may be immediately painful. In both cases, see your doctor for a health assessment.

1. Symptoms for common health problems: Chest pain

Most people associate chest pain with a heart attack, but pain could be caused by a different health problem. You may have another type of heart problems such as angina or lung problems such as pneumonia, a pulmonary embolism, asthma, gastrointestinal problems, such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease or stomach ulcer. All the above require a physician consultation.

2. Symptoms for common health problems: Blood in urine

Blood in urine is a concern and may be the first symptom of prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate or bladder cancer or kidney stones. Kidney disease or injury can cause blood urination like inflammation or infection of the bladder, kidneys or urethra.

3. Symptoms for common health problems: Shortness of breath

Is another symptom that could signal a heart attack or congestive heart failure. Or you could have a lung disease such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma or pulmonary hypertension. Shortness of breath is also a symptom associated with anemia.

4. Symptoms for common health problems: Hair Loss

While hair loss is a natural part of aging, it can also be a warning of a more serious health condition: an autoimmune disease such as lupus, infectious diseases such as syphilis or thyroid disease.

5. Symptoms for common health problems: Erectile Dysfunction

Approximately 70% of erectile dysfunction cases are due to other medical problems. Diseases that can cause erectile dysfunction are diabetes, heart disease, atherosclerosis, kidney disease, neurological disease, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis and vascular disease.

6. Symptoms for common health problems: Fatigue

Fatigue involves lack of energy and motivation continues and is a normal response to circumstances such as stress, physical exertion or lack of sleep. However, fatigue can be a symptom of more serious diseases: congestive heart failure, diabetes, arthritis, infections and kidney or liver disease. Fatigue also can be a symptom of anemia, depression, sleep disorders, or a defect in the thyroid gland.

7.  Symptoms for common health problems: Dizziness

Dizziness occurs when there is not enough blood reaches the brain. It can result from a sudden drop in blood pressure or dehydration. Dizziness often accompanies health problems such as flu, allergies or hypoglycemia. It also may indicate a serious risk to health: heart disease, stroke or shock.

8. Symptoms for common health problems: Excessive thirst

Is a prominent symptom of hyperglycemia and, therefore, is an indication that you may have diabetes. Excessive thirst is a symptom associated with internal bleeding, severe infection or heart problems, liver or kidney.

9. Symptoms for common health problems: Memory loss

Health risks associated with memory loss: Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumors, brain infections, brain damage, depression, encephalitis, stroke and alcoholism. Certain vitamin deficiencies can lead to memory loss.

10. Symptoms for common health problems: Vision problems

Vision deteriorates as you age. However, blurred vision may indicate a serious eye: cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment or macular degeneration. Or, it could indicate a health problem, such as a migraine, a stroke or a brain tumor.
