When was the last time you went on a safari? Oh, never? Okay, how about this one… when was the last time you took care of a medical concern, such as vision loss, well checks, plastic surgery or even fertility treatments in another country? Never? Well, times, they are changing. If you’ve never been out of your native country for medical care or a vacation, why not combine both?

You may not think of South Africa as a prime medical tourist destination, but it is. South Africa has earned a reputation for the best medical tourism and travel packages around the world. South Africa, and most especially, Cape Town, has the best surgeons and facilities for a variety of treatments and procedures, including orthopedic care, cosmetic and plastic surgery, fertility and IVF treatments, Executive Healthchecks, general surgery and LASIK eye care.

Affordable surgery in South Africa gives you access to some of the most experienced and highly trained doctors and surgeons in the world, offering high-class medical care and quality. Surgeons and facilities in South Africa are registered and accredited by the South African Medical and Dental Councils. Medical travelers from around the world can save roughly 50% on costs for similar surgeries in the U.S., Great Britain, Australia and Canada.

Not only does South Africa offer both public and private and public medical settings for medical care and recuperation, but one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world while they’re at it.

Check it out at PlacidWay.com, your one-stop medical travel resource provider for medical travel abroad.

You may think you are. How about this question… if you decided to venture abroad for a medical treatment or procedure, do you know what to look for? We don’t know why, but many patients are hesitant to ask their doctor, surgeon, or facility for information regarding training and experience.

Why is that? We ask questions of our mechanics when it comes to car repairs, we ask questions about our schoolteachers, and we are certainly not hesitant to question a realtor or agent before buying a house. So why are people so hesitant to ask questions of their doctors?

We encourage everyone to ask questions. Ask questions of your doctor, surgeon or hospital staff regardless of where you’re from, and where you may be headed. Always take the time to find out information about any medical provider – at home or abroad. This is important whether you’re seeking treatment for age spots or you’re considering cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery or a cardiac transplant.

Here’s a list of possible questions to ask regarding healthcare facilities – at home or in Thailand, Croatia, South America or Jordan.

* How does the medical facility or service best meet my needs?

* How will I benefit from a specific service or facility?

* Do staff and/or service provide successful treatment?

* Is the doctor certified? Is the facility accredited by national or international accrediting organizations?

* Is the procedure/doctor/facility affordable?

This is just a starting point. Ask. After all, it’s your body. For informational resources about traveling abroad for medical care, visit PlacidWay.com.

Have you found that your hip is giving you trouble? Find it hard to sit or stand, and boy oh boy, is it harder to get out of bed in the morning, especially during colder winter months? You may have arthritis or osteoporosis, or the fallout from an old injury.  Millions of people around the world face conditions that reduce range of motion and mobility in their hips. Common treatments range from exercise to hip replacement.

If you’re a baby boomer, chances increase that you may be diagnosed with bone or joint conditions that affect your hip. Hip replacement treatments and procedures are often suggested when damage caused by osteoarthritis or injuries limit your comfort and ability to get around. The procedure or treatment recommended will depend on your specific needs and goals. Hip replacement surgeries these days are minimally invasive procedures.

More common hip resurfacing procedures replace the surface of the hip joint, but remove less bone tissue than traditional hip replacement procedures. This procedure removes less bone and encourages faster healing and recuperation.

Hip resurfacing and replacement procedures in the U.S. are outrageously expensive, often topping out at $60,000! Who can afford that these days? However, you do have options abroad. Accredited and established facilities in India, Turkey, and South Korea top the list of excellent and highly trained orthopedic surgeons experienced in hip procedures.

Don’t hobble around and be in pain just because you don’t have medical insurance or feel you can’t afford hip surgery. Get online and research your options for medical care abroad. You’ll be glad you did.

According to recent studies reported by the Journal of Hospital Medicine (2011;6:454-461), JCI-accredited facilities are able to publicly report outperformance based on quality measures, and performance levels continue to increase every year thereafter, according to the report.

At the same times, scores of such hospitals and facilities continually improve over non-accredited hospitals by roughly 26%, though it’s important not to discredit non-accredited hospitals, which should not be considered substandard by any means. Accreditation by international accrediting organizations such as the JCI is strictly voluntary.

However, accreditation does promote a dedication toward improving quality and performance and has been used as a marker for excellence first in the U.S. and now abroad, for nearly a decade. (Roughly 82% of hospitals in the U.S. are currently accredited by the JCI.)

The Joint Commission evaluates medical facilities based on a standard of requirements that must be met in order to ‘pass’ inspection. Considerations inspection teams include:

  • Medical staff credentials and training
  • Nursing staff credentials and training
  • Medication Management
  • Infection Control
  • Environment of Care
  • Patient Rights
  • Provision of Care Treatment Services

International accreditation standards are focused on patient care, continuity of care, referrals, discharge protocols and procedures, follow-ups, and transfer of patients to other facilities or specialists. The accreditation process ensures that medical providers as well as hospital and medical facilities are able to identify and determine medical needs of patients before they are admitted.

Patients often hesitate to ask a doctor, surgeon or facility about their training and experience. Why is that? We don’t hesitate to check out our children’s teachers or daycare providers. We access feedback when it comes to our auto mechanics or contractors. So why not our medical providers?

When looking for the best of medical or dental care abroad, you need to ask questions. For example:

  • How will the medical practice, facility or service best meet my need?
  • Why will I benefit from your specific service or facility?
  • Does your service provide safe and successful treatments?
  • Does the physician, surgeon or facility provide adequate feedback or proof?
  • Is the doctor/facility certified or accredited by national or international accrediting organizations?
  • Does the doctor/facility offer affordable solutions to patients?

Never hesitate to ask any question that comes to mind before choosing any medical provider, at home or abroad. PlacidWay encourages medical patients, no matter where they’re from or where they’re going, to ask questions of a medical provider, whether they’re seeking treatment for a root canal or obtaining cosmetic surgery or a cardiac transplant.

PlacidWay is an international medical tourism provider and resource based in Denver, Colorado, a growing leader in the health and wellness industry. Earlier this year, over a dozen new prescription drugs hit the market, treating conditions from diabetes to hyperlipidemia to osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Those wondering whether to take these drugs or seek alternative treatments should know the benefits and drawbacks of such drugs. Here’s a brief rundown of just a few of the newest drugs to hit the market this past spring:

Tocilizumab – a biological agent for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Your doctor has to administer this drug via I.V. or intravenous delivery. This one comes with a variety of warnings and adverse reactions such as upper respiratory tract infection and hypertension. However, it can be used in combination with other DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs) for those diagnosed with moderate to severe RA.

Dalfampridine – mainly used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, Dalfampridine, also known as Acorda or Ampyra, is a potassium channel blocker. Designed to facilitate movement and walking ability for patients, it was shown to increase stability and walking speed during clinical trials. Results in trials were 50/50 for showing improvement. Adverse reactions include dizziness, nausea and balance disorder.

Denosumab – this drug binds to proteins in the body responsible for the formation of osteoclasts, those cells charged with bone resorption. The drug reduces loss of bone mass and strength, often prescribed for those diagnosed with osteoporosis. Adverse reactions to this drug include musculoskeletal pain and skin reactions.

Regardless of origin, patients and consumers should learn as much about drugs prescribed by their physicians as possible. PlacidWay, an international medical resource and provider, is dedicated to offering information for patients making decisions regarding their medical care, at home or abroad.
